Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72 years old in Long Beach, California. DuVernay learned to love art through her grandmother Denise. The aunt worked as an overnight nurse in order to give her an opportunity to study theatre or literature. DuVernay quickly became enthralled with the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay learned by example that art can be an avenue for action. DuVernay had her mother who was socially conscious and showed her how to utilize art as a method to express herself. Even though DuVernay was raised living in Compton with her family, she was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The summers she spent in Alabama's Selma influence her later on to create the film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. She attended University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English and African American Studies. As a student DuVernay began to consider producing for television journalism. She began as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to check the trash in the house that belonged to a member of jury. The tasks that she had to accomplish left her unsatisfied and so, after deciding not to continue in the field of journalism, she was able to move to the field of public relations. DuVernay was immediately hired from college to be an assistant publicist in an unassuming studio. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. Alongside PR, her agency also launched several lifestyle and promotional networks including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
